Duties and responsibilities:

The Office of the Deputy Director General is responsible for assisting the Director General (DG) in the implementation of the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) programs and activities; in planning, managing and monitoring the activities of all subject matter departments; in the management of international relations and regional & international statistical integration; in the coordination and monitoring of technical assistance services provided through different development partners; and in dissemination of official statistics. 

To accomplish its mission, the Office of the Deputy Director General, is organized into the following seven units:

Deputy Director-General (DDG):

       Mr Ivan MURENZI
  Deputy Director General

Mr. Ivan MURENZI is the Deputy Director General (DDG) at the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda from 5 April 2017 to date, and he is a statistician and economist with expertise in research, data collection and analysis.

Prior to that, his worked as a financial inclusion specialist and later as Head of digital services at Access to Finance Rwanda (AFR) for 6 years. His responsibilities included leading research on financial inclusion (finscope Surveys) ; supporting development of various financial sector policies and strategies to promote MSME financing, mobile finance services, branchless banking among other interventions.

Prior to joining AFR, he worked a range of government institutions, research organizations, and a private consulting firm such as PwC and Institute of Policy Analysis and Research (IPAR). He holds a Master’s in Policy Economics from the Centre of Development Economics, Williams College; Massachusetts, USA.

Mr. Ivan MURENZI also served in various Boards of Directors and Councils, including:

  • Member of Monetary policy Committee of the Central Bank
